Cyclic Anaerobic Filter

In Indian climatic conditions anaerobic process is best available process for treatment of effluent. It is most energy efficient process, required less maintenance and nearly operator-free operation. This saves valuable electrical energy. Anaerobic processes have wide range of applications from domestic effluent to distillery effluent (COD range from 600- 90000 mg/L).

Effluent coming from various sources will be collected in equalization basin. In equalization basin effluent will be equalized homogenously.

In case of larger plants equalization basin is equipped with separate mixing pumps, while in smaller plants (effluent generation less than 100 cubic meters per day) same feed-pump can be use for mixing.

Equalized effluent will be sending for anaerobic degradation.

In anaerobic degradation process, BOD/COD are converted in to CH4 and CO2 i.e. methane and carbon di oxide. Degradation of BOD/COD is carried out by specially inoculated and acclimatized anaerobic bacteria. This process can be represented as –

Cyclic Anaerobic Filter - Fluid System

Nitrogen and phosphorous are consume by bacteria for their metabolic activities.

Cyclic anaerobic degradation is flow-through contact process. In this process wastewater pass over or through biofilm formed by anaerobic bacteria. Organic matter (contributing BOD/COD) in wastewater diffuse in to surface of fixed biofilm layers or granules where they are converted in to primary organic acids subsequently in to gases.

Feathers of cyclic anaerobic filter are –

  • Tolerate variable hydraulic loads – Mixed liquor suspended solids cannot be washed away by hydraulic surge since effluent withdrawal is typically accomplished in separate phase following termination of flow to each reactor.
